Relativistic effects in time delay of atomic photoionization

چکیده
We study relativistic effects in time delay of atomic photoionization using an example of the Xe atom subjected to a circularly polarized electromagnetic pulse. We find that while relativistic effects play only a fairly small role for both the ionization probabilities and the time-delay of the co-rotating electron with the same sign of the angular momentum projection as the circularly polarized light, these effects produce substantial change in the time delay for a counter-rotating electron with the opposite sign of the angular momentum projection.

Time delay in valence shell photoionization of noble gas atoms
We use the non-relativistic random phase approximation with exchange to perform calculations of valence shell photoionization of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe from their respective thresholds to photon energy of 200 eV. The energy derivative of the complex phase of the photoionization matrix elements is converted to the photoelectron group delay that can be measured in attosecond streaking or twophoton tra...
متن کاملWhere does atomic photoionization begin?
We perform a time-delay analysis of of strong field ionization of atomic hydrogen in the tunnelling regime. We obtain the values of the time delay from the quantum-mechanical calculation involving solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and use these values as parameters defining corresponding classical trajectories. We demonstrate that almost all the classical trajectories, define...
متن کاملRelativistic photoionization cross sections for C II
High resolution measurements of photoionization cross sections for atomic ions are now being made on synchrotron radiation sources. The recent measurements by Kjeldsen etal. (1999) showed good agreement between the observed resonance features and the the theoretical calculations in the close coupling approximation (Nahar 1995). However, there were several observed resonances that were missing i...
متن کاملTime delay in atomic photoionization with circularly polarized light
We study time delay in atomic photoionization by circularly polarized light. By considering the Li atom in an excited 2p state, we demonstrate a strong time delay asymmetry between the photoemission of the target electrons that are coand counter-rotating with the electromagnetic field in the polarization plane. In addition, we observe the time delay sensitivity to the polar angle of the photoel...
متن کاملSingle photoionization of highly charged atomic ions including the full electromagnetic-field potential
A previous fully relativistic time-dependent close-coupling method [Phys. Rev. A 81, 063431 (2010)], developed to study the photoionization of highly charged atomic ions, is substantially modified to include the full electromagnetic-field potential. Expansion of a one active electron wave function for the time-dependent Dirac equation in spin-orbit eigenfunctions yields close-coupled equations ...
